Town Cleanup Day, Wolfeboro 2019

4/20/2019 from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM ET

On Saturday, April 20th area residents are invited to participate in Wolfeboro Town Cleanup Day.  Many families, civic groups, and businesses have made this volunteer activity an annual tradition – a great way to neatly tuck away the long winter and fully embrace the season ahead.

The melting snow banks tend to reveal accumulated litter lying under the snow.  This Winter thaw reminds us that there is no “away” when it comes to trash.  Under all that snow, cigarette butts, cans, bottles, plastic bags, miscellaneous wrappers and a host of unfortunate debris reveals itself to the detriment of our beautiful town.

Thankfully, the challenge to clean up this mess never goes unmet.  For the last several years the Wolfeboro Solid Waste & Recycling Facility and Global Awareness Local Action (G.A.L.A.) have teamed up to organize a concerted effort at road curbside cleanup.  Last year volunteers filled nearly 100 garbage bags of litter from the Wolfeboro streets alone.  The staff at the Solid Waste Facility then sort, recycle, and/or appropriately dispose of the trash collected.

Of course anyone can pick up litter along their street whenever they wish and indeed many people already have.  One of the benefits of participating in Town Cleanup Day is that full bags of litter may be left on the side of the road where they will be collected by the town the following day.  This added convenience can be enough of an incentive for the general do-gooder to hold off on their curb cleanup until the big day, in this case Saturday April 20th

If you are interested in participating in Wolfeboro Town Cleanup Day, there will be a sign-up table open from 8:30am to 11:00 where you are asked to register - at GALA’s offices at 23 Bay Street.  The registration table will be stocked with gloves, safety vests and bags for all volunteers, as well as a list of street assignments for you to choose from if you do not already have one in mind.  Registration is important to help the crew at the Wolfeboro Solid Waste Facility know which streets to collect bags the following day.

If you are planning to volunteer on April 20th, please remember to wear bright colors and bring your own water.  The organizers also ask that anyone driving the roads that Saturday morning be extra careful and contentious of volunteers.  For more information or to register a group contact Ivette Babylon at G.A.L.A. by calling 569-0169 or email ivette.babylon@gmail.com
