Community Contra Dance, April 2019

4/27/2019 from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM ET

G.A.L.A.’s 4tth Saturday Community Contra Dance series continues Saturday April 27th, from 7-10 in the Town Hall in Wolfeboro. Come alone or bring friends and join us for the best way to get your indoor exercise! Not only are no partners needed, it is very family friendly, and the simple dancing is easily learned by all ages in the first couple dances of the evening.

You don’t have to know what to do, as all the dances are called, this night by Shari Shakti, an experienced Maine caller who has called all over New England. Since discovering a love of calling, Shari has called dances ranging from small to 120+ dancers.  She particularly enjoys the diversity and watching the dancers having FUN!

The live band is Binding Energy; fiddle, piano, hammered dulcimer and Irish flute are just some of the instruments played by this evening's three wonderful musicians, who share musical specialties, including Celtic, French-Canadian and Scottish music.
Dr. Paul Lizotte, fiddler with Boston-based Floorplay, who in his spare time is a professor of English at Rivier University, has been playing fiddle for 20 years, including being awarded a NH Humanities Council Traditional Arts Apprentice grant for further studies with fiddle master Rodney Miller. Brad Robinson will join in on guitar, and lastly, Irish whistle and wooden flute musician Jim DiCarlo has, when not teaching physics, performed for 20 years with some of the northeast's top fiddlers.
Dance admission fees are as follows:  $8.00 for adults, $5.00 for 6yr-18yr olds, and 5yr and under free.  Anyone experiencing financial hardship or large families are welcome to pay as able.  In an effort to protect the newly refinished wood floor in the Great Hall participants are encouraged to bring an extra pair of shoes for dancing that do not have a black sole.  If you are unable to bring extra shoes there will be a brush at the door for you to remove dirt and snow before entering.
G.A.L.A. is also looking to fill a few volunteer shifts for the dances this year if you are interested.  There are two different volunteer shifts, each lasting 2.5hrs.  Setup shift from 6pm – 8:30, and Cleanup shift 8pm – 10:30pm.  G.A.L.A. will provide you with all the support you need to fulfill either shift.  For more information about this event or to sign up to volunteer visit their website at, call the office at 603-569-1500, or email
