It has been difficult to hold off until now in recognizing Jessica Cole as a Volunteer of the Month, for she seems to show up ready to help at all the right G.A.L.A. moments. Pictured above is Jessica flexing her pipes after a full day at a Sustain-A-Raiser where she was pivotal in constructing those beautiful hemlock raised beds in the background. Jessica has already volunteered at five Sustain-A-Raisers this spring alone! Pheew!
In addition to the grunt work of shoveling compost, cutting lumber, and sheet mulching, Jessica brings a valuable permaculture perspective to G.A.L.A, with a focus on working with herbs. It should come as no surprise then that Jessica is a Certified Herbalist and owner of Sumner Brook Herbals where she manages a small farm shop selling her handcrafted, wild harvested heal-all salves, Chaga Chai, tinctures, teas, and other delicious and medicinal herb blends.
One of the Jessica’s most beautiful characteristics is her willingness and passion to share her knowledge. Pictured below is Jessica helping participants make their own herb salve to conclude the Backyard Medicinal Herb Walk she led as part of G.A.L.A.’s monthly Self Reliance Workshop Series. Check out a VIDEO from the herb walk here.
And last but certainly not least, Jessica is a G.A.L.A.Board Member!! So not only is Jessica swinging hammers at Sustain-A-Raisers and leading workshops, but she is also a respected member of the Board helping with everything from strategic planning to fundraising development, membership, and beyond.
Jessica, we are so incredibly grateful for your tireless commitment to sustainable community building, both through your dedication to G.A.L.A., as well as your work at Sumner Brook. Our community is a better place because of you and it is our honor and privilege entirely to recognize you as Volunteer of the Month!
