We are looking forward to offering memberships to our new GALA Community Makerspace in the near future, so stay posted!
The GALA Community Makerspace will operate much like a gym, but instead of exercise equipment there will be tools, and instead of trying to get fit, people join to learn a new skill, develop or scale up a business idea, gain credentialing for employment mobility or career transition, or to simply tinker, fix, or repair everyday household items.
As a member you’ll be able to use the various workshops and their tools and equipment on a DIY basis; attend workshops, programs and special events; hang out with like-visioned people; or rent space on a short-term basis for projects that you don’t have the room for either at home or at work. Our makerspace will include work studios /shops for woodworking, metalworking, jewelry making, fabric and fine arts, digital fabrication, media/AV, workplace upskilling, and a commercial kitchen in Phase II.
The first type of membership we’ll have to offer will be to join the GALA TOOL LENDING LIBRARY. We hope to have this up and running during the fall of 2020. In the meantime, if you have tools and equipment that you no longer need, and are looking to repurpose them, we’d love take them off your hands – or out of your garage/basement! The GALA Makerspace is open to receive Tool Raiser items on Tuesday and Thursday mornings between 9:30am and noon.
A tool-lending library is just like a regular public library, except instead of books, it has a collection of tools – woodworking tools, home repair tools etc – and you can simply check out any of these tools whenever necessary, subject to availability. You don’t have to buy or rent new tools for every home project, and you don’t have to find space in your house to store a lot of tools you hardly ever use.
